Stills from Dragon Ball GT: Season Two (Click for larger image)

As the second season of Dragon Ball GT gets under way, Goku is still battling Baby, the last survivor of the Tuffle (originally Tsufrulian) race. It's a relief to the galaxy when Goku's Ultimate Kamehameha Blast sends Baby's ship into the sun. Once Baby's been dispatched, the filmmakers seem to lose their way. The Z Fighters evacuate all the residents of Earth to the Tuffle Planet before the Black Dragon Balls cause the Earth to explode, but the Namekian Dragon Balls restore the planet before anyone's had a chance to miss it. The remainder of the season plays like a "greatest hits" album. Dr. Gero, Frieza, Cell, and Android 17 from seasons 3, 4, and 5 of Dragon Ball Z reappear and are defeated again. Goku reverts to his little boy form, which makes him appear younger than his granddaughter Pan. It seems Goku and his friends have used the Dragon Balls too many times: all the good things they've wished for have been balanced by huge amounts of negative energy retained in the Balls, which crack, releasing the seven nasty Shadow Dragons. Goku and Pan fight them, first one by one, then as a fused super-dragon. Also included is A Hero's Legacy, which aired as a television special in 1997. Set 100 years after the conclusion of Dragon Ball GT, it stars Pan's grandson "Goku, Jr." as a wimpy little boy who's just discovering his Saiyan powers. The special may have been an attempt to revive the franchise yet again, but after more than 500 TV episodes and 13 features, Akira Toriyama's saga of the enchanted Dragon Balls finally concludes with Legacy. Review & Description

Continuing the storyline based on the hit Playstation® game Final Fantasy VII, two years have passed since the ruins of Midgar stand as a testament to the sacrifices made in order to bring peace. However, the world will soon face a new menace. A mysterious illness is spreading fast. Old enemies are astir. And Cloud, who walked away from the life of a hero to live in solitude, must step forward yet again . . .
The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it’s based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud’s former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita

Review & Description

For the first time ever, the buck wild samurais of the Champloo crew are carving up the competition on Blu-ray…catch the action now before the game passes you by.

Let’s break it down. Mugen’s a reckless sword-slinger with a style that’s more b-boy than Shaolin. He’s got a nasty streak that makes people want to stick a knife in his throat. Then there’s Jin, a deadbeat ronin who speaks softly but carries a big blade. He runs game old-school style, but he can make your blood spray with the quickness. When these roughnecks bring the ruckus, it ain’t good for anybody, especially them. Enter Fuu, the dizzy waitress who springs her new friends from a deadly jam. All she wants in return is help solving a riddle from her past. She and the boys are tracking the scent, but there’s ninety-nine ways to die between them and the sunflower samurai.Shinichiro Watanabe's film noir-ish sci-fi adventure Cowboy Bebop set a new standard for cool in anime in 1998, and Samurai Champloo, an edgy mix of Edo-era martial arts and hip-hop irreverence, is a worthy follow-up. A string of coincidences brings together three misfits in a two-bit tea house: Mugen, a rebellious vagabond; Jin, a taciturn ronin; and Fuu, a nutty waitress. The sardonic Mugen lacks the polish that distinguishes a classic martial artist--he uses break dance spins and flips against his foes. Jin moves with a polish that approaches iciness: When he unsheathes his sword, he becomes a lethal work of art in motion. Fuu forces Jin and Mugen to help her find a mysterious samurai "who smells of sun flowers." As the ill-assorted trio wanders towards Nagasaki, Watanabe treats the audiences to a string of outrageous, anachronistic adventures. In Episode 18, Mugen belatedly learns to read at a smackdown elementary school, while Jin tries to settle the rivalry between the heirs to the dojo of his former sensei. The seemingly unrelated storylines collide in a no-holds-barred graffiti contest featuring Tokugawa rap lyrics, ink-brush tagging, Hiroshima homeboys, and a caricature of Andy Warhol. But Watanabe reveals the hidden significance of these nutty interludes when he brings his picaresque adventure-comedy to a close. Like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo leaves the viewer wanting more. Review & Description

It Only Hurts Forever....

Rin Asogi is an immortal private detective with a thirst for vodka and a talent for attracting things that go bump in the night. In a series of nightmarish vignettes spanning sixty-five years, Rin’s lush body is sadistically pierced, blown up, and mulched to a bloody pulp. The fiend behind her tortured existence is Apos, an eternal being obsessed with sacrificing Rin to Yggdrasil, the tree of all life. While Rin struggles to unravel the secrets of her endless agony, Apos lurks in the shadows, eager to tear into her ripe body and devour the memories of her countless lives. Rin’s no stranger to the realm of the dead, but her next visit could last forever.Although it incorporates a lot of up-to-date CG effects, the violent fantasy Rin: Daughter of Mnemosyne (2008) feels older than it is. The story elements lifted from earlier series ranging from Ah! My Goddess to X contribute to the passé tone. Having ingested a "time fruit" produced by Yggdrasil (the tree of creation in Norse mythology), Rin, the voluptuous title character, is immortal--and she proves it by dying and coming back with a frequency Shirley MacLaine might envy. Assisted by her equally deathless sidekick Mimi, Rin pursues mysteries and malefactors that invariably involve the eerie Apos, the murderous immortal/cyborg Sayara, and various members of the Maeno family. All the evil schemes and feats of derring-do provide opportunities for a lot of fan-service nudity and grotesque violence. Rin feels like a throwback to the sadistic misogyny of Wicked City and Demon City Shinjuku: Rin, Mimi, and the secondary female characters are subjected to assaults that range from mutilation and torture to being simultaneously raped and devoured by male angels. Although the subtitle refers to Mnemosyne, the personification of memory in Greek mythology, Rin is better forgotten. (Rated TV MA: suitable for ages 18 and over: nudity, profanity, grotesque imagery, alcohol use, violence, violence against women, cannibalism, torture, and sexual situations, including lesbianism and bondage) --Charles Solomon
